Many times, after joint replacement surgery, physicians refer patients to our physical therapy practice with the goals of recovering mobility, strength, and function. Our therapists provide one-on-one, evidence-based physical therapy treatment sessions to help facilitate your recovery and return you to activities of daily living, work, recreational activities and even competitive sports. During the course of your recovery, we maintain regular communication with your surgeon to ensure your progress matches your surgeon's expected outcome.
The rehabilitative process depends on the type of surgery, precautions from your physician, and your functional status prior to the surgery. We have successfully rehabilitated patients with the following joint replacements:
- Hip, knee, ankle and toe replacements
- Shoulder, elbow and finger joint replacements
Some of the treatments used to accomplish the goal of regaining movement and reducing pain, swelling and stiffness may include one or more of the following:
- Rehabilitative exercises to help increase strength, endurance, motion, coordination and function
- Manual therapy and neuromuscular retraining
- Soft tissue and/or joint mobilization
- Gait and balance training
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) - electrical muscle & nerve stimulation
- Pre and post-operative pain education
